The Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (FJCU) had the privilege of welcoming the Minister of Religious Services, Rabbi Michael Malkieli, to refugee camp by Lake Balaton, Hungary.
Hundreds of children and dozens of families from Ukraine warmly greeted the minister. During his visit, Rabbi Malkieli assisted a young boy in putting on tefillin for the first time, a significant and touching moment.
The minister listened to the unique and harrowing stories of the refugees' escape from Ukraine, learning about the hardships and dangers they faced and how this camp has become a safe haven for them. He saw children who are now scattered around the world but reunited at this summer camp, feeling the warmth of community and reconnecting with friends they once lived close to.
Rabbi Malkieli expressed his profound gratitude to the FJCU and EMIH for their relentless efforts in creating and maintaining this sanctuary.
